Wallace University is rocked by a string of murders. All hell is about to break loose at Wallace University where, 20 years after a tragedy, a killer begins targeting the sisters of Kappa House. There were no wire hangers in last night's Scream Queens, but the mother of all horror-movie characters still got the ultimate homage in the appropriately titled episode, "Mommie Dearest."

Strangely, the smaller the cast gets, the less the handful of characters still around actually interact with each other. That leaves the episodes feeling oddly sparse, despite everything that happens within them.

Subtlety has never been a defining characteristic of Ryan Murphy's work, and the latest episode of Scream Queens is no exception. This hour was all about mothers - or, more accurately, how our relationship with our mother can really f- us up.

In fact, though it certainly wasn't as exciting as Scream Queens Season 1 Episode 7, this was a very strong episode, particularly at the just-beyond mid-season mark where we are now.

Even Jamie Lee Curtis's recreation of her mother Janet Leigh's famous scene in Psycho didn't have the weight it might have had in earlier episodes, thought it was a fantastic moment for horror fans.

Since abandoning the chill and thrills for straight up LOLz, Scream Queens has his its stride and won my heart as a dark comedy that's one part Heathers and two parts American Horror Story: Coven, with a dash of ... campiness.
