We return again during the fifth season, which has many dramatic and comedy scenes, where Jimmy tries to prove something different. Jamie seems to be trying to prove that, although he is about to become a married man, he has not lost his capacity entirely for everything. On the other hand, Edgar and Lindsay seem to agree to go to a real date.

What I will tell you is that this show, which for years took every possible stab it could at the callow selfishness of its characters, ends up embracing them with empathy and understanding.

It's scathingly funny, but also acutely sad. Though the show is mostly rooting for Jimmy and Gretchen to get over themselves and make it work, it also doesn't run from the idea that neither can be their best so long as they're with the other.
