Functional without much of the awestruck wonder its premise should elucidate, Timeless still scrapes by thanks to one of the fall's best new lead characters (and actresses) and a hint that things could get far more creatively brazen down the line.

Spencer is wonderful as the plucky, brilliant heroine. The premiere's production values have an epic look unusual for weekly television.

It's an infectious, engaging hour that sets up the rules of this universe efficiently and effectively (i.e., they can't double back to anyplace they might meet themselves), and the cast gels quickly.
