All in all, this episode proved that incredible television does exist just by telling the simplest of stories. This Is Us is returning to its roots, and I will have a front-row seat watching it blossom.

"Us" has a knack for packing an incredible amount of story into its 42-minute installments, and as such they're often a mix of the good, the standard and the bad. "Katie Girls" was no exception.

The terrific juxtaposition between the past and the present this week is all about mothers... It's a lovely bit of storytelling - so much so that I actually wish the Kevin and Randall storylines had been cut down a little to make more room.

"Katie Girls" reminded me a lot of my favorite episode from last season...lower stakes but emotionally nuanced. Or maybe the reason I connected so strongly to tonight's episode is simply because it put my favorite character front and center.
