The X-Files - Season 11 Episode 03: Plus One
'The truth is out there,' and FBI agents Scully and Mulder seek it in this sci-fi phenomenon about their quest to explain the seemingly unexplainable. Their strange cases include UFO sightings, alien abductions and just about anything else paranormal. The tales were spooky and well-written, but the long-running cult favorite's strength was a gallery of intriguing (when they weren't just enigmatic) characters, and the dynamic---and intense bond---between believer Mulder and skeptic Scully.

Creator Chris Carter delivered easily his best episode as writer in the rebooted series with a story that answers that question and gives us a creepy horror story to boot.

Seeing Scully's and Mulder's doppelgangers gave the Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny something a little different to do rather than playing their usual characters.

Narrative-wise, this case file was replete with clunky dialogue, bad exposition, and just an overall lack of sense, capped off by a truly anti-climatic climax that was resolved far too easily.

It's an interesting story for Scully considering Gillian Anderson has said she's done with The X-Files after this season. Whether intentional or not, it gives the episode a ring of inevitability that echoes real life.

Chris Carter returns to pen this week's episode, "Plus One," an hour that works mostly as a stand-alone thriller but is far more effective for anyone who has a history with Dana Scully and Fox Mulder.

The creep factor is offset by a broad comic tone that does not feel as discordant as it does in some of Carter's more out-there efforts.
