This season begins with Samcro fresh out of jail and back into Charming. Upon their arrival, they encounter new law enforcement and head right back to business. Meanwhile, SAMCRO Vice President Jax considers retiring to raise a family, and Clay is suspected of playing a role in the death of Jax';;;s late father John Teller.

With a cast this big and plots this complicated, it can be a challenge to keep up. Then again, if you're willing to do the work, it more than pays off.

If the start of the season feels formulaic, it's a formula that's worked in the past, and one that gives very good material to key members of the ensemble.

Sons Of Anarchy has always delved in high drama (and heightened drama), but makes it compelling enough to somehow be more artistic and intriguing.

So far, there's no indication that there's enough brewing here to measure up to Season Two, but the show seems to be solidly back on track after the problems of Season Three.

It wouldn't be going too far to say that the season 4 premiere of Sons of Anarchy is like taking a bath in everything the show tends to do well.

Tuesday's season premiere resets the story in a way that should be satisfying to long-time fans while introducing a new, wily adversary for the club in the form of a motorcycle riding assistant U.S. attorney.

The fourth starts out a little slowly, as though it's taking a deep and much-needed breath after the third's wildly operatic conclusion. But the pace quickens soon enough. Anarchists will be hooked.

I'm still not a full-blown fan, but there's a definite latent appreciation for what still amounts to The Sopranos on two-wheelers.
