It's a quality show for sure, but at least initially, it lacks the magnetism of the Hollywood icon it pays homage to.

Smash is to Glee as Broadway is to community theatre. You can enjoy the latter and have a blast seeing it, but it's not the same as a production like this one that really hums on every professional level.

There's no letdown in any of the pacing, dialogue or overall mature, intelligent way Smash approaches a universe that no other series has ever dared touch.

Smash does a very good job of establishing the world these characters inhabit and their distinctive roles in getting this musical off the ground, and, in the process, investing you in their stories and struggles.

I would gladly pay $75 for an orchestra seat to see the show-within-a-show. The way things are going, I would pay $100 if the purchase exempted me from having to watch any more of the show itself.

Unfortunately, none of that interesting struggle (for success in the Big Apple.) can be found in Smash - NBC's pabulum take on The Great White Way.
