An orphan gets caught up in a deadly conspiracy after learning that she is a clone. It says a lot about Orphan Black that two scientists extracting a brain in a bathtub is one of its most purely fun scenes in ages.

"Formalized, Complex, and Costly" is packed with plot-driven dialogue, even if the plot itself hasn't advanced much by the end of the episode.

Carrying over my frustrations from last week, I spent a good chunk of "Formalized, Complex, and Costly" wondering why the mysterious conspiracy at the center of Orphan Black was no longer holding my interest.

As if the series didn't have enough narrative clutter to fight through, Orphan Black continues to reintroduce these phantom limbs from seasons past, seemingly desperate to bail out the sinking ship.

By all means, it's still a perfectly fine episode, but one whose quality is a bit diluted by the developing cracks in its foundation.
