With its playful, murder most horrid air, McDonald and Dodds seemed more suited to weekday afternoons than Sunday primetime, but by episode end I was ready to give it another chance.

Jason Watkins seizes the role with relish. It's the sort of part he does to perfection - an odd, awkward, craven, brilliant man who ('Sorry, ma'am') can't stop apologising.

The drama hasn't quite settled on the right tone: the murder plot, involving scheming businessman Max Crockett, was light stuff, meaning that the racism aimed at McDonald sat awkwardly with it.
