Even after repeated views, this show remains enigmatic, engrossing, and suspenseful.

With his quirks, twitches and improbable feats of deduction, D'Onofrio's Detective Goren can be annoying but does provide this version of the Law & Order stable with a point of difference. Without him it's just another cop show.

Shows like Criminal Intent hang their formula-driven plots on the personalities of its stars. D'Onofrio, Erbe, Noth, and Nicholson are all reasonably good but none is really capable of carrying the show, either.
