Season 15 opens with Abby waking up after the ambulance explosion and, though she realizes she has a broken wrist, quickly rushes to check on the others in the ambulance. A mother and daughter are also rushed in from the explosion and Abby misdiagnoses the case.

By the end, I was almost as sorry to see minor characters like grumpy desk clerk Frank (Troy Evans) and nurse Haleh Adams (Yvette Freeman) leave the screen as I was major players like Wyle and Stamos.

What I may have liked most of all was just watching different characters, some major, some minor, take their final leave of the show without fanfare.

Long-running television series, no matter how brilliant they once were, invariably suffer creative declines. Some are capable of rebounding for at least one good season, but most are not. Worse, they lose their relevance.

But as you may have heard, the series drew to a close last night after fifteen years, and while it was emotionally satisfying, it won't go down in history among the great series finales.

Whether it had lasted for only five seasons or the amazing fifteen it ended up achieving, ER has definitely earned its place in television history.
