Different romantic and drama looks strong tells the series. The series begins with the story of a woman named Debra Newell, who meets a handsome doctor named John Mehan. John and Debra began a new and very exciting love story, but perhaps his sweetheart John would be attracted to a sinister game in Southern California that turns her life into another turning point.

I expected so much more. In the end, "Dirty John" only managed to spin a new con - promising dessert and delivering a plate of lukewarm leftovers.

Dirty John has too often reinstated the rules of the "woman-in-peril" dramas that the realism of the earlier formats allowed it to escape.

Enter "Dirty John," a Bravo event series adapted from the salacious multi-part Los Angeles Times articles and podcast, which...basically plays like an old-school Lifetime movie, just stretched into episodic form.

Britton and her talented co-stars are wasted here on a warmed-over Lifetime movie masquerading as a prestige TV miniseries - one that's, sadly, not even trashy enough to qualify as a guilty pleasure.

There is some pleasure in watching the inevitable unfold, particularly since the cast is solid. Britton is, as usual, a sympathetic lead, even if her character is written to be shallow.

Dirty John knows what (and where) it is and doesn't bother taking itself too seriously, which adds an intriguing and digestible aspect throughout.

Best of all, "Dirty John" mostly avoids the cliche of making Debra appear to be a fool or a dupe.

The eight-episode series is boosted by strong performances all around. Britton (and, let's be honest, her hair) make every show she's in better, whether it's Friday Night Lights, Nashville, SMILF, or (yes) 9-1-1.
