The characters of Big Mouth represent a generation who have to lead while learning, and that's pretty screwed up in its own right. It's also strangely realistic. Big Mouth captures all of that, sometimes in its most embarrassing glory.

The bits might be better and the individual jokes might be funnier, but it's a little more scattered as a whole. Maybe that's the point. That's how the teenage brain works, after all.

But like the damp, demanding imaginations of its protagonists, this show never runs dry. Instead of following the didactic beats of a Very Special Episode, Big Mouth excels in setting up situations and reveling as they spiral in every messy direction.

Big Mouth's new season is fine, with some flashes of brilliance, and it's hard to actually dislike the show's new episodes. The problem is that it feels like sometimes Big Mouth isn't entirely sure which boundaries to push.

Big Mouth's characters soar and remain believable, but the series is still laugh-out-loud funny and has some of the best dialogue, wordplay, and bizarre non-sequiturs of any comedy on television.
