It's clear that the series hasn't quite plunged the deepest, darkest recesses of Norman's damaged psyche. Moreover, the series proved that there's still plenty of story left to tell between the show's events and the events of Psycho.

In the best way possible, Bates Motel is how it's always been. It's strange and off-kilter, it plays with truth and hints at extremely dark acts, and it's at its best when it grounds itself in emotional truths.

Now that we've arrived at the version of Norman the show has threatened from the beginning, I suspect things will rapidly start spinning out of control.

The series continues the steady ratcheting-up of the emotional stakes of the show, the way Norman is identifying more and more explicitly with his mother, and how their embraces are increasingly dances toward death.

"A Danger to Himself and Others" gave us Norman as a full-fledged psycho. All while hammering home just how badly Norma's been taking care of him. Or not taking care of him, as it were.

This was a great premiere that bodes well for the season ahead. My favorite thing about it was that they showed that they're clearly no longer playing around with things now- its full steam ahead at this point.
