American Horror Story - Season 5
The Hotel Cortez is in for another horrible and bloody show this season as it plays host to two merciless serial killers. The Ten Commandments Killer that justifies his criminal actions by selecting his victims in accordance to biblical teachings. The Addiction Demon moves about in the Murder Castle carrying a drill looking somewhat like a dildo to finish off his victims.

Ultimately, American Horror Story: Hotel does little more than establish a setting in its premiere episode.

As ever, the set design is spot on and brilliantly atmospheric, but ultimately this feels too similar to other, better series to really stand out.

The findings are auspicious. AHS: Hotel more obviously resembles the first two, better seasons of American Horror Story than it does the latter, lesser two.

Executive producers/writers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have clearly confused gore with fear, and they're not the same. There's plenty of the former, and the later is, sadly, missing.

In short, what's old is new again, a theme many hotels have used in their day. For Horror Story, heading into its fifth season, it sure feels due.

They're pushing boundaries. Screw your need for normalcy. You can get that anywhere. And, on that level, Hotel works. The question of quality comes down to the tolerance you have for style over substance.

Disturbing us is the point, of course, but good horror stories go beyond grotesqueries and gore. American Horror Story: Hotel may do that, but I won't know; I don't plan to spend another night there.

If it falls short, that could be because the premiere feels more cruel than scary.
