it's easy to fall back on self-conscious humor. But if, as the author, you have to keep interrupting your story to remind the audience how dumb the material is, what's the point of telling the tale in the first place?

Director Stephen Sommers has a kind of soulless, leaden touch, with none of the sleek, sprightly fun this kind of movie requires.
