The series follows a young couple who move to Williston, North Dakota, after the biggest oil discovery in American history. Billy and Cody Lefever dream of a new life beyond their working class roots and move to 'The Bakken' in North Dakota, booming after the biggest oil discovery in American history. They're soon pitted against a ruthless tycoon who forces them to bet big and put everything on the line, including their marriage.

ABC's Blood and Oil was one of several new series of the 2015-2016 season to see a showrunner depart due to "creative differences" before premiering. Having now twice seen the pilot, I'm not surprised.

On the one hand, it's full of a lot of the cheesy stereotypes and ludicrous plotting that my soap-loving side is crazy about. On the other... that's about all there is, and what's there isn't very good.

It is loaded with suspense, heart and intrigue and the scenery is gorgeous in more ways than one. Gee, I sound like I am gushing. I enjoyed it and can see it winning over Americans who don't watch football on Sunday night.

Johnson is fun but Crawford is flat and dull, too unengaging to really be a lead on a show like this one... And I don't expect viewers to tune in every week without a hero to keep them engaged.
